1. What is the Michigan Uniform Energy Code?

Michigan developed its own energy code following adoption of the Model Energy Code and subsequent repeal of the rules by the Legislature.   In 1996 a committee consisting of homebuilders, code officials, and other interested parties began drafting the Michigan Uniform Energy Code.  The Department of Consumer and Industry Services (now the Department of Labor & Economic Growth) promulgated the code in 1999.  The Department has recently promulgated a revised Michigan Uniform Energy Code, a more stringent energy efficiency standard, which was to be effective February 28, 2005.

ON FEBRUARY 24, 2005, THE INGHAM COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT ISSUED AN INJUNCTION ON THE IMPLEMENTATION DATE OF THE REVISED MICHIGAN UNIFORM ENERGY CODE. AS A RESULT OF THE JUDGE'S ORDER, THE CODE DID NOT GO INTO EFFECT ON FEBRUARY 28, 2005 AND IS NOT BEING ENFORCED. KEEP CHECKING THE ENERGY OFFICE WEBSITE FOR UPDATES.

Commercial

1. How does the Michigan Uniform Energy Code affect commercial construction?

The State of Michigan, in April 2002, adopted ASHRAE 90.1-1999 standard as the new commercial portion of the MUEC. 

This standard can be purchased through ASHRAE at the following website:  ASHRAE Bookstore - Superseded Standards

It is also recommended that you purchase the Users Manual for this standard to clarify issues or questions you may have about the standard.
