What is Biomass Energy? Biomass is any organic matter which is available on a renewable basis through natural processes or as a by-product of human activity. Biomass includes: agricultural crops and wastes, wood and wood waste, energy crops, and municipal solid waste. Biomass can be converted into energy through many different means such as combustion (burning), gasification, fermentation, and anaerobic digestion.

What We Do
The goal of the MBEP is to encourage increased production and use of energy derived from biomass resources through program reports, partnerships, technical assistance, and education.
In the last few years program reports have been completed on ethanol, anaerobic digestion, and wood waste. MBEP has partnered with state agencies and other organizations to coordinate workshops, facilitate an ethanol working group, and to increase the biofuel infrastructure in Michigan. The program also offers funding for state project grants on a regular basis.

Who We Are
The Michigan Biomass Energy Program (MBEP) is located in the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth/Energy Office. MBEP receives its primary funding from the Great Lakes Biomass State-Regional Partnership (GLBSRP). Other states participating in the GLBSRP include: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The GLBSRP is one of five regional offices in the U.S. Department of Energy's Regional Biomass Energy Program, which was established in 1983.
