Contact:  Maura Campbell 517.373.9280
Agency: Labor & Economic Growth

OCTOBER 06, 1998 - The Upper Peninsula community of Dafter will get a $5,000 state grant to promote and provide home energy ratings, announced Governor John Engler.

Seminars, outreach through the media and the co-op's web site will be used to inform homeowners about the availability and benefits of home energy audits and ratings.

"This grant will help spread the word about the importance of having houses inspected by experts to see how homeowners can improve energy efficiency and save money," Engler said.

The funds were awarded by the Energy Resources Division of the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS).

The energy savings this grant will promote will be especially helpful in an area where people experience very cold and long winters," said CIS Director Kathleen Wilbur.

The grants are part of more than $100,000 in federal awards to 20 nonprofit and public agencies to educate consumers about energy efficiency and renewable energy options
