APRIL 24, 1998 - Nearly 1000 nominations for Governor John Engler's first Governor's Quality Care Awards for excellence have been received! The selection process to determine finalists is underway. However, due to the tremendous volume of responses, the task of selecting finalists must be narrowed down. The tour of finalists to determine winners will begin mid-May.
The award will recognize outstanding care and programs at Michigan's child and adult day care facilities, nursing homes, long-term medical care facilities and statewide providers of these vital services. It is sponsored in conjunction with the Department of Consumer & Industry Services' (CIS), which licenses these facilities.
Responsible for selecting finalists is a team derived from Services to the Aging, Bureau of Health Systems, Community Health representatives, Michigan 4C's Association, an early childhood education and day care service, Michigan Assisted Living Association and Michigan Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.
"Truly, Michigan is a leader in its quality of care," said CIS Director Kathleen Wilbur. "This is evident in the overwhelming response we have received, our citizens recognize and appreciate these special caregivers."
Nominations were received from families, nursing home residents, parents and caregiver peers who have experienced or witnessed unique care. Criteria for the awards was developed by child care and long-term care providers, supporters, and others active in promoting high standards of professionalism in Michigan's daycare centers, nursing homes, adult foster care, homes for the aged and special-needs programs.
