APRIL 07, 1998 - Nearly 1000 statewide nursing homes, day care providers and other caregivers have been nominated for Governor John Engler's first Governor's Quality Care Awards for excellence in care.
The event will recognize outstanding care and programs at Michigan's child and adult day care facilities, nursing homes, long-term medical care facilities and statewide providers of these vital services. It is sponsored in conjunction with the Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS), which licenses the facilities.
"I'm very pleased with this excellent response to showcase the outstanding women and men who give exceptional care to our children, elderly and those with special needs," Engler said. "This opportunity to say thank you to the ‘unsung' heroes who put extra quality into the lives of so many Michigan residents has been enthusiastically received."
Nominations forms for the May awards event were sent out in March to statewide families, nursing home residents, parents and caregiver peers who have experienced or witnessed unique care. Criteria for the awards were developed by child care and long-term care providers, supporters, and others active in promoting high standards of professionalism in Michigan's daycare centers, nursing homes, adult foster care, homes for the aged and special-needs programs.
CIS Director Kathleen Wilbur knows the importance of quality caregivers and programs.
"We owe a great deal to those who give extraordinary care to our loved ones," said Wilbur. "This event is an excellent way to show our appreciation for that care, and judging by the number and variety of nominations we're getting, Michigan is blessed with many special caregivers."
