AUGUST 8, 1997 - Inspecting the State Theater's upcoming renovation plans today was the head of the state agency that approved the $250,000 restoration grant.
Kathleen Wilbur, Director of the Department of Consumer & Industry Services that houses the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), toured the historical structure to get a firsthand look at the project that will transform it into a 750-seat performing arts complex. The State Theatre was one of a few select cultural facilities to win a financial grant from MCACA last spring for renovation projects.
"Along with Governor Engler, who personally presented the $250,000 award in June, I'm so pleased that the state was able to help make this exciting restoration possible," Wilbur said. "We recognize and appreciate the theater's historical contribution to downtown Traverse City, and its future importance as a home to the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, traveling production companies and school functions."
The grant was part of $10 million surplus in the 1996 budget. The Governor designated the sum for capital projects, such as construction and renovation, at arts and cultural facilities statewide.
Wilbur also has a personal interest in the State Theater's make over.
"Because my in-laws, Alison and Chuck Wilbur, live in Traverse City, my family visits here quite often," Wilbur said. "Not only do we love the area, but my husband Tom has many fond memories of the State Theater as a youngster. We are all looking forward to its transformation into a cultural center for performing arts."
