Contact:  Maura Campbell 517.373.9280
Agency: Labor & Economic Growth

OCTOBER 29, 2001 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS), Bureau of Regulatory Services issued an order of summary suspension and notice of intent to revoke action to Newaygo County family day care home providers: Kristi McBride, 4484 E. 82nd Street, Newaygo, Michigan and Patricia Farkas, 4516 E. 82nd Street, Newaygo, Michigan. Kristi McBride and Patricia Farkas were ordered to immediately cease providing care to children effective 6:00 P.M. on Friday, October 27, 2001. These actions are the result of a recent complaint investigation of the two family day care homes.

Under Michigan statute, a Family Day Care Home is defined as "a private home in which 1 but fewer than 7 minor children are received for care and supervision for periods of less than 24 hours a day, unattended by a parent or legal guardian, except children related to an adult member of the family by blood, marriage, or adoption. Family day care includes a home that gives care to an unrelated minor child for more than 4 weeks during the calendar year."

The October 26, 2001 findings of the complaint investigation found that:

· A 14-year-old male inappropriately touched a 4-year-old day care child in the day care home of Patricia Farkas, a relative. He resides in the day care home of Kristi McBride.

Effective 6:00 P.M., October 26, 2001 the Summary Suspension Order required Kristi McBride not to operate a Family Day Care Home at 4484 E. 82nd Street, Newaygo and Patricia Farkas not to operate a Family Day Care Home at 4516 E. 82nd Street, Newaygo or at any other address or location. Children are not to be received for care after that date or time. The order also requires Kristi McBride and Patricia Farkas to inform all of the parents or guardians of children in care that their certificates of registration have been suspended and that they can no longer provide child care.

Kristi McBride and Patricia Farkas have each signed a consent order and stipulation accepting the summary suspension and revocation of their respective certificates of registration. Kristi McBride has held a certificate of registration to operate a Family Day Care Home since June 6, 1994 and Patricia Farkas since May 20, 1996. Each certificate of registration was for 6 children.
