OCTOBER 16, 2000 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has summarily suspended the practical nurse license of Arlene M. Thompson, L.P.N., for failing to comply with an order of the Michigan Board of Nursing concerning substance abuse treatment and monitoring. The CIS Bureau of Health Services orders a summary suspension when it believes the public’s health, safety and welfare warrant emergency action.
On May 5, 1998, Thompson was required by the Board’s order to comply with the terms of a monitoring agreement with the Health Professional Recovery Program (HPRP), a monitoring program that supports recovery from substance abuse, chemical addiction and mental illness. Enacted legislatively in 1994, the HPRP encourages health professionals to address their problems before their impairment harms a patient or damages their careers.
Although Thompson initially agreed to the requirements of the program, she was not successful at following the recommended treatment. The HPRP closed her file and returned it to the Department, which summarily suspended her license. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Thompson’s suspended nursing license.
