SMS Millcraft Receives State Award for Outstanding Safety & Health Record

June 18, 2009 - SMS Millcraft's Taylor facility received the CET Silver Award today from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for an outstanding safety and health record. The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG).
"We are very pleased to recognize SMS Millcraft's Taylor facility for their outstanding efforts to create a safe and healthy work environment," said DELEG Deputy Director & Chief of Staff Susan R. Corbin. "We applaud your commitment and diligence, which has made this outstanding achievement possible."
The MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division recognizes the safety and health achievements of Michigan employers and employees through CET Awards, which are based on excellent safety and health performance. The CET Silver Award recognizes an outstanding safety record of 50,000 - 1,500,000 continuous hours worked without days away from work based on the employer's size and type of business.
MIOSHA CET Division Director Connie O'Neill presented the award to Plant Manager Greg Merta; Union Safety Chairman Ken Anderson; and the Safety Committee. The facility has 44 employees, many of whom are represented by United Steelworkers Local 2649. The Taylor facility has gone nearly two years without a lost time accident.
"The personal safety and awareness exhibited by all of our employees has allowed all of us to reap the rewards of an accident-free work environment," said Merta. "Our families reap the added reward of having a safe loved one at home. It has been proven that safe work habits translate to safe habits at home."
Besides going nearly two years without a lost-time accident, the company has completed the following criteria to receive the CET Silver Award:
Developed and implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system;
Established a safety and health committee, with both employee and management participation;
Developed an employee training system, with an emphasis on how to do the work in a safe and healthful manner; and
Worked diligently to change their workplace culture to reflect the importance of worker safety.
SMS Millcraft is committed to the safety of all their employees. This is accomplished by emphasizing the importance of safety awareness in the workplace and at home; encouraging safe employee behavior; fostering the ongoing development of participative, results-oriented safety initiatives; enforcing noteworthy housekeeping standards; and communicating expectations.
The facility has worked with the MIOSHA CET Division, and CET Senior Safety Consultant Jennifer Clark-Denson performed a hazard survey on site, which is a part of the award process. This survey allowed them an opportunity to walk through the facility with a MIOSHA representative and correct any problem areas that were noted.
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for the SMS Millcraft Taylor facility is 811310 − Machinery and Equipment Repair and Maintenance Services. Their total case incident rate (TCIR) was 4.3 in 2007 and 0.0 in 2008, which is significantly below the Michigan industry average of 8.4 for both years.
"Companies that establish an integrated safety and health program reap the benefits of significantly reducing their injury and illness rates," said O'Neill. "Reducing these rates not only protects employees-it has a healthy impact on a company's bottom line."
