May 13, 2008 - Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) Director Keith W. Cooley announced today that the Michigan Energy Office has initiated a rebate program to pay a portion of the costs for retail service stations to advertise the availability of ethanol (E85) or biodiesel (B20) on freeway exit signs. Rebates of up to $1,500 are now available to cover 50 percent of the costs to design, install, and pay the first year's annual fee for retail service stations that offer these biofuel products and participate in the Michigan Department of Transportation's Logo Sign Program.
"This program will make it easier for fleets and consumers to find and buy ethanol and biodiesel fuels as they travel throughout the state," Cooley said. "Our goal is to encourage increased availability and visibility of alternative fuels like E85 and B20 so that many more drivers can use these fuels in Michigan without having to search high and low."
Interested service station owners can contact Michigan Logos at (888) 645-6467 or check their website at: www.michigan.interstatelogos.com/state/home.aspx. Michigan Logos staff will determine service station eligibility and assist the owner throughout the process. The sign must specify that E85 and/or B20 are offered at the station. Program information and rebate application forms are available either by contacting Tim Shireman at (517) 241-6281 or shiremant@michigan.gov or by visiting the Energy Office website for a printable copy at: www.michigan.gov/documents/dleg/Biofuel_Signage_Rebate_Application_Form_233036_7.pdf.
Biofuel Signage Rebate applications must be submitted before September 30, 2008 to qualify for the rebate. Rebates will be available on a first come basis until funds are exhausted. If funds are available after October 1, 2008, additional rebates to cover 50% of the second year's annual fee for the sign will be offered to first-year rebate recipients. For a current list of public and private access ethanol and biodiesel fueling sites, check the Michigan Department of Agriculture's website at: http://www.michigan.gov/mda/0,1607,7-125--187045--,00.html.
The rebates are funded by a federal program and will be administered by the DLEG Energy Office, which promotes alternative transportation fuels and technologies, energy efficiency and renewable energy to Michigan's residents, public institutions and businesses.
