DECEMBER 1, 2006 - The latest edition of the Department of Labor & Economic Growth's (DLEG) cable show Consumer's Corner, hosted by Director Robert W. Swanson, features guest Nida Samona, chair of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for a discussion about underage drinking and tips for all ages to stay safe during the holiday party season.
In this edition, Swanson interviews Samona about the Liquor Control Commission and what it's doing to address underage drinking and other alcohol-related issues.
"The Michigan Liquor Control Commission is working in partnership with The Century Council, to raise awareness among parents about how their teens get the alcohol they drink and emphasize the importance of talking to teens about the dangers of underage drinking," Swanson said.
According to The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking

65% of underage youth who drink obtain alcohol from
family and friends, with or without permission.

7% of youth report that they obtained alcohol from
retailers who failed to check for identification.

Last year in Michigan, 812 youths under the age of 18
were arrested for driving under the influence and more
than 5,000 youths were arrested for liquor law violations.
