DELEG Director Pruss Receives 2009 Guardian of the Great Lakes Award

NOVEMBER 5, 2009 -- Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth Director Stanley "Skip" Pruss received the "Guardian of the Great Lakes" award for his commitment to protecting Michigan's natural resources and creating a clean energy economy.

The award is the highest offered by the Clean Water Action organization and was presented during their 2009 Great Lakes Awards celebration held last night in East Lansing. Director Pruss was honored along with seven other Michiganders for their commitment to the environment.

"We selected Director Pruss for his commendable cooperation with the environmental community and aggressive leadership in protecting our natural resources and in moving forward energy efficiency, advanced battery technology, and wind and solar power initiatives for Michigan," said Cyndi Roper, Michigan State Director.

Pruss said, "I've enjoyed working with Clean Water Action and other key stakeholders to protect Michigan's many environmental treasures and to create a clean energy economy in our state."

In addition to Director Pruss, other award recipients were: 
  • Great Lakes Heroine: Trisha Stein, Campaign Manager, Diane Hathaway for Supreme Court Great Lakes Champion: Patty Gillis, Executive Director, Voices for Earth Justice 
  • Lawmaker of the Year: State Representative Rebekah Warren 
  • New Lawmaker of the Year: State Representative Sarah Roberts 
  • Clean Energy Leadership: Jennifer Alvarado, Executive Director, Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association 
  • Volunteers of the Year: Doug Howell of Huntington Woods and Sarah Chartier of Grand Rapids
