Agency: Labor & Economic Growth

JULY 22, 2008 - Stephen M. Geskey has been named director of the state of Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA).

The UIA, an agency within the Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG), administers the state's unemployment insurance program. The agency issues state and federal unemployment benefits to qualified and eligible jobless workers and collects state unemployment taxes from employers.

In making the announcement, DLEG Director Keith W. Cooley said, "Stephen has extensive experience and a deep knowledge of unemployment insurance that will well serve the agency and Michigan's workforce and employers."

Since 2005, Geskey had chaired the Michigan Employment Security Board of Review, which hears appeals of unemployment insurance decisions made by administrative law judges within the State Office of Administrative Hearings & Rules. He was appointed to the chair's position by Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Prior to joining the Board, Geskey was an assistant attorney general in the Michigan Attorney General's office for nearly eight years, where he had most recently been the supervising attorney of the Employment Litigation Section within the Public Employment, Elections & Tort Division.

From January 1996 to November 1997, he worked for the Michigan House of Representatives and was assigned to the House Judiciary Committee for the House Democratic Caucus.

A 1992 graduate of Michigan State University (MSU), he earned a bachelor's degree with a dual major in psychology and environmental science. In 1995 he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit Law School and joined the State Bar of Michigan. In 2007, Geskey received a master's degree in business administration from MSU's Eli Broad Graduate School of Management.

Among his outside activities, Geskey has been on the board of directors at the Woldumar Nature Center, co-chair of the public sector section of the Ingham County Bar Association and a member of the Association's publications committee.

Geskey is married and has three children. He and his wife currently serve in a marriage mentoring program through their church for pre-matrimonial couples.
