May 7,
2008 - The Michigan
Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) will be presenting information
about its No Worker Left Behind program at a Job Connections Expo taking place in Sterling
Heights on May 8.
Sponsored by
General Motors Corporation and the United Auto Workers (UAW), the Job
Connections Expo is aimed at GM workers who are considering buyout options or
retirement offers.
DLEG and Michigan Works! Agency representatives will
be on hand to explain the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) program, Governor Granholm's initiative to offer up to two years worth of
free tuition at any Michigan community college, university, or
other approved training programs for training in high demand occupations and emerging industries
or entrepreneurial endeavors. NWLB gives Michigan workers the opportunity to acquire
the skills they need to win good-paying jobs in today's global economy.
The Expo is
a one-day opportunity for GM workers to learn from retirement experts, gather
information about educational resources, and learn about franchise opportunities
and other options for starting a business. Hiring companies will be present.
The Sterling
Heights Expo will take place at the Sterling Inn/Best Western, 34911 Van Dyke Avenue, Sterling Heights, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Another expo
will be held in Lansing on May 9 at the Lansing Center, 333 Michigan Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Expo is
open to all GM workers as well as their families. There is no charge to attend. Please be advised that the sessions are not open to the media; however, participants may consent to be
interviewed at the conclusion of the session.
