How to Become Licensed as a Solicitor

Resident Solicitor

• File an Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application through the National Producer License Registry (NIPR) website. The application/license fee is $20.00 plus a $5.00 transaction fee. An application is good for six months from entry into our database. For questions relating to electronic application submission, contact NIPR Customer Service at 855-674-6477.

• Complete required prelicensing coursework. Visit our Prelicensing page for information for property and casualty applicants.

• Successful completion of the examination. If the examination is not passed within six months, the applicant must submit a new license application and fee and reschedule their examination. Visit our Examination Information page for information specific to the examinations.

Non-Resident Solicitor

Non-Resident solicitor applicants must be licensed as a solicitor in a state that required successful completion of an examination to obtain a license or they must take the Michigan examination.  Applicants who need to take the Michigan examination should refer to our Examination Information page to review the examination requirements for Resident applicants.

• Successful completion of the examination if the applicant is not active in another state that requires an examination. If the examination is not passed within six months, the applicant must submit a new license application and fee and reschedule their examination.
