Micheal Grooters of Cheboygan was the proud recipient of the April 2004, Achiever of the Month award. This single parent of four boys first came to the FIA for assistance in October 1987. At that time, Micheal was 18 years old, pregnant, and needed help providing for her family. Through the Cheboygan County FIA she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Food Assistance (FAP), and Medicaid.
Micheal faced several barriers while trying to find employment; she had difficulty locating affordable housing, struggled to cover day care costs and needed assistance with auto repairs. Through Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program, Micheal was able to receive subsidized housing. The FIA helped Ms. Grooters obtain auto repairs, tires and auto insurance. Additionally, the agency also provided child day care.
For several years, Micheal was on and off FIP. However, even when she received a cash grant, she continued to work. Her previous employers include; Carters Food Stores, Family House Restaurant and Glens Market. Each change in her employment resulted in more pay or more hours worked.
Ms. Grooters’s hard work finally paid off. On February 28, 1999, her FIP case closed due to her earnings. Micheal continues to receive Medicaid, FAP and child day care. However, she no longer collects any type of cash assistance from the FIA.
In August 2001, Ms. Grooters, secured a job as a Labeling and Packaging Specialist with Great Lakes Slaughter and Meat Processing in Cheboygan. She still works there today.
Micheal Grooters is a wonderful role model for her children. Through her example they have learned that through perseverance and determination you can overcome major challenges and find success.
