The December 2004 Achiever of the Month award was presented to Kimberly Merritt of Genesee County.

Ms. Merritt is the single parent of two children. She turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in February 2001. At that time she was unemployed and needed assistance providing for her family.

Detroit resident Kirstae Hogan is the proud recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award for November 2004. This single parent of three children first came to the Wayne County, Lafayette District, FIA office in December 2003, when she was unemployed and needed help providing for her family.

Angela Denny of Ionia County was the proud recipient of the October 2004, Achiever of the Month award. This single parent of one child turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in September 2003, when a change in administration at her work place left her jobless.

Achiever of the Month Akia MitchellAkia Mitchell
Port Huron resident Akia Mitchell is the 130th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This single parent of two children first came to the FIA in November 1998. At that time, her youngest child was a baby and Akia, needed medical assistance for him. The FIA approved Medicaid for her son.

In February 1999, Akia again, applied to the FIA for assistance. She was unemployed, had a baby, lived at home with her mother and was beginning her college education at St. Clair County Community College.

Roxanne Gougeon of Alpena was presented with the August 2004, Achiever of the Month Award. This single parent of three children first applied to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance with her former husband in 1989. At that time, Roxanne was 17 years old and pregnant with their first child.

Charlotte resident Karen Marie McMillan is the 128th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This married mother of three children came to the Eaton County FIA for help in August 1985 when she was an unemployed high school dropout, single and pregnant.

Tammy LaJoie, of Escanaba, is the 127th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This mother of three boys came to the Delta County FIA for help in November 1992. At that time she was pregnant, living with friends, had not earned her high school diploma and had no transportation.

Vanessa Cole is the 126th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This mother of two boys came to the Branch County FIA for help in July 1997. At that time, she was pregnant and needed assistance with medical care. Through the FIA Ms. Cole received health coverage from the Healthy Kids program.

Micheal Grooters of Cheboygan was the proud recipient of the April 2004, Achiever of the Month award. This single parent of four boys first came to the FIA for assistance in October 1987. At that time, Micheal was 18 years old, pregnant, and needed help providing for her family. Through the Cheboygan County FIA she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Food Assistance (FAP), and Medicaid.

Lakeysha Durden Freeman is the 124th recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This single mother of three girls came to the Tireman/Central District FIA for help in May 1993. At that time, she was a teenager, recently separated from her spouse and pregnant with her first child. Additionally, Lakeysha was without transportation and was being threatened with eviction.

Vicki Donovan of Gladwin was presented with the February 2004, Achiever of the Month award. This single parent of four children applied to the Gladwin County Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in November 2000, after moving to the area to be closer to extended family members. At that time, Vicki was separated from her spouse, had just obtained employment and needed help covering day care costs.

Achiever of the Month for January 2004, Tara BryantTara Bryant
Tara Bryant, proud mother of three children, is the 122nd recipient of the Family Independence Agency's (FIA's) Achiever of the Month award.

In 1998, Tara was receiving Medicaid and Food Assistance Program benefits (FAP) to help make ends meet. In April 2000, she applied to the Ingham County FIA for cash assistance, when she had to end her employment at a child care center.
