| Kinship Care/Family Decision Making (FGDM) |
Kinship care or suitable relative placement, which includes placement with a friend of the family who has "relative status" is the favored alternative to foster care. FGDM is designed to help families develop a plan to ensure that children are cared for and protected from future harm in ways that empower the family and utilize community resources. FGDM is being piloted in six Michigan counties. It is designed to:
1. increase the role of the family and fictive kin, in the care and protection of children.
2. increase the capacity of communities to ensure safety, protection and permanence for children using kinship supports as an effective intervention strategy.
3. decrease the number of out-of- home placements, and
4. decrease CPS recidivism
The pilot will be evaluated by measuring these indicators and considered for statewide expansion based on the outcomes.
