Environmentally Preferred Purchasing (EPP)

Contact: Karen Edlin (517) 373-0604

Agency: Natural Resources

A Memorandum of Understanding between the Michigan Department of Management and Budget (DMB) and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has created a statewide purchasing partnership to increase the use of Environmentally Preferred products in state government.

It is the mission of the Environmental Purchasing Partnership to encourage and increase the use of products and services in state government that impact the environment less than competing products, taking into account raw materials, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the product.

What is "environmentally preferable?"

"...products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose..."

One main goal of this program is to promote the inclusion of environmental factors along with product safety, price, performance, and availability when any product is purchased for state government use.

Additional information about locating and identifying Environmentally Preferred Products can be obtained by contacting the Department of Management and Budget, Acquisition Services at (517) 335-0230.
