The DEQ today presented one of its highest environmental stewardship honors to General Motors, LLC Flint Assembly Plant at a ceremony held at the plant.

The historical automotive manufacturer earned the DEQ's Michigan Clean Corporate Citizen Program designation. It is the eighth General Motors facility and the 174th Michigan facility to earn this prestigious honor.

The C3 program is a voluntary environmental program that recognizes environmental stewardship at Michigan facilities. Candidates demonstrate they have facility-specific environmental management systems, well-established pollution prevention programs, and a consistent compliance record with state and federal environmental requirements.

Utilizing an environmental management system and implementing voluntary pollution prevention efforts has produced cost savings for General Motors, LLC - Flint Assembly. The company estimates the facility has saved at least $250,000 through reductions in energy, water, and material use, as well as reduced solid and hazardous waste disposal costs.

The General Motors, LLC - Flint Assembly sits on a 159-acre portion of a 300-acre manufacturing complex shared with General Motors Flint Engine Operations, Flint Metal Center, and Van Slyke Utilities Operations. The General Motors, LLC - Flint Assembly assembles and paints the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra brand trucks. The facility consists of a body shop, paint and coating operation, vehicle trim line, and a final assembly and test operation area.  The General Motors, LLC - Flint Assembly is currently a three-shift operation which employs about 2,300 hourly and 237 salaried people.
