The DEQ today announced it has approval 22 Coastal Zone Management grants totaling $879,560 that will be used by coastal communities, nonprofit organizations, state agencies, and universities to fund projects that protect Michigan's valuable Great Lakes coastal resources.

The grants enhance public access to coastal areas, encourage stewardship through beach clean-up programs, promote public safety at beaches and support local and regional waterfront redevelopment plans.

"We are excited to partner with coastal communities and provide these grants to support protection and wise use of our coast and Great Lakes freshwater resources," said Dan Wyant, DEQ Director.

Funding for the Michigan Coastal Management Program is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association through a state and federal partnership established under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972. This funding helps the DEQ protect coastal habitat and improve coastal resources, ensure federal activities are consistent with state laws and provide technical and financial assistance to coastal communities.

The MCMP is committed to protecting, restoring, and promoting appropriate, sustainable use of our Great Lakes coastal resources. For additional information about MCMP and a list of the grants, go to www.mi.gov/coastalmanagement
