Submerged Cultural Resources Management

Contact:  Tom Graf 517-335-3471
Agency: Environmental Quality

The Submerged Lands Program staff administers the management of the estimated 2,000 shipwrecks located on Michigan’s Great Lakes bottomlands. These unique resources are managed in conjunction with the Department of History, Arts and Libraries, Michigan Historical Center, as authorized in Part 761, Aboriginal Records and Antiquities, of the NREPA. Currently, there are nine underwater preserves designated in the Great Lakes. These preserves are "underwater museums" that provide a snapshot in time of our maritime heritage. For more detail, see the Michigan Shipwreck site.
