Digital Oil and Gas Permit Well Files

Oil and Gas Permit Well Files Oil and Gas Permit Well Files (PWF) are the documents that are generated over the course of the life of a well - from application to plugging.  The content of the file depends on the history and activities at the site.  These are the files that were on microfilm.  Currently the files for permits 1 to 52,999 are available in TIF format.  There is no charge for the files (see details below).  PDF format may also be available.

Individual well files
If you have a well with a permit lower than 52999 we can email you the file.  Email us with your request.  We will send you one email for each permit you request.
We can also get copies from well files 53000 and above.  Depending on the files size this may involve a Freedom of Information Act (
FOIA ) request and you will be billed.  FOIA request should be sent to:

The digital PWF are provided as multiple page TIF files.  In order to view and print them you might need some additional software.  There are sites on the internet from which you can download software.  Some of the software is free or evaluated before you buy it.

The Office of Geological Survey has tested several products and has found that either
v XnView ( www. xnview .com) or
v IrfanView ( www. irfanview .com )
would likely meet most, if not all, of your needs.  Both are free downloads.

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions please contact  Steve Wilson .
