Michigan Air Toxics Program Overview

The function of the Toxics Unit is to evaluate the human health impacts of toxic air pollutants, to provide toxicological expertise for the development and implementation of the Division's air toxic programs, and to develop, coordinate, and implement air toxic programs for the protection of the Great Lakes ecosystem and inland lakes. Some specific activities include the following: 

  • Develop health based screening levels for toxic air contaminants for the implementation of the State's air toxic rules.
  • Evaluate toxic ambient air monitoring data to determine the impacts to human health.
  • Evaluate stack test data for the toxic air contaminants to determine the impacts to human health.
  • Participate in the coordination, development, and implementation of Section 112 of the federal Clean Air Act, dealing with programs to control hazardous air pollutants.
  • Respond to information requests on toxic air pollutants from Division staff, Department staff, the general public, etc.
  • Participate in the coordination, development, and implementation of various programs for the protection of the Great Lakes from toxic air pollution, including such things as the following: Lakewide Management Plans (LaMPs), Remedial Action Plans (RAPs), the Great Waters Programs (CAAA program). Lake Superior Binational Strategy, Regional Air Toxics Inventory (RAPIDS) etc.
  • Serve as the lead staff in the Division for mercury reduction/P2 activities, including participation in the Mercury Pollution Prevention Task Force, Regional Mercury Workgroup, Mercury and Utility Study Workgroups for those studies required under federal CAAA, oversight of Michigan's Mercury Reduction Action Plan, etc.
