Department of Environmental Quality Director Steven E. Chester announced today that a pollution prevention project proposed by Preferred Family Medicine of Oakland County has received a $31,628 low interest loan through the DEQ's Small Business Pollution Prevention Loan Program.

Preferred Family Medicine will use the funds to install a digital x-ray machine and associated equipment which will eliminate the need for radiographic film, lead-lined film containers, and the chemicals used to develop the film. The new equipment will also reduce water and energy usage compared to conventional x-ray equipment.

"This project is an example of the many ways that businesses of all types, including medical offices, can play a role in reducing pollution," said Director Chester. "I applaud Preferred Family Medicine's commitment to protecting the health of our families, as well as the health of our environment."

The DEQ and the company's local lending institution, National City Bank, each contributed half of the loan proceeds.

"We're excited to be installing this new x-ray equipment in our office," said Dr. Marc Weisman, president of Preferred Family Medicine. "As medical professionals we understand the importance of a healthy environment. This new equipment will prove better for both our patients and the environment."

Businesses with fewer than 500 employees can apply for loans of up to $400,000 with a guaranteed interest rate of not more than 5 percent. The short application helps businesses describe how their projects will eliminate or reduce waste through source reduction, environmentally sound reuse, and/or recycling; including water and energy conservation projects.
