Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS) Calendar

July 28-20, 2008
7th Annual Invasive Species Field Course

This Field Course has been developed to teach educators and environmental professionals about invasive species in the Great Lakes region, and to prepare them to effectively teach their students, colleagues, and volunteers about invasive species. It also provides a unique combination of professional seminars at Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes Campus and hands-on field experience aboard the Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA's) 77-foot schooner Inland Seas. Emphasis will be on aquatic invasive species and the concept of "prevention through education." Participants will learn about initiatives to help reduce the introduction and spread of new invasive species. For course information and application materials, please visit http://www.schoolship.org/schoolship/?id=671 .  Or contact Christine Crissman 231-271-3077 cdiana@schoolship.org

August 4-7, 2008   The Northwestern Michigan College Great Lakes Water Studies Institute (WSI) is now accepting applications for the 2008 DTE Freshwater Institute for Teachers. DTE Freshwater Institute for Teachers features rich content, hands-on learning, collaboration and community-based projects about water resources.  Teachers will first participate in a 4-day summer institute at NMC's Great Lakes Campus and at a variety of field locations from August 4-7, 2008.  The summer institute has three areas of focus: (1) water resources and watershed management; (2) place-based education, and; (3) inquiry-based teaching and learning. Participants will receive ongoing support from WSI staff and local community partners to help develop and implement their place-based projects. Also they will receive a $400 stipend, a $200 mini-grant and the option to enroll for 3 graduate credits.  Due to the extensive follow-up during the school year, preference will be given to applicants within reasonable driving distance of our two target communities - Traverse City and Ann Arbor.
