Project: Equal Start is collaboration between the Grand Traverse County Health Department (Healthy Futures) and Michigan State University Extension - Grand Traverse (Parents as Teachers).

Healthy Futures is a partnership of area health care providers, Health Departments and Munson Healthcare. Participants in Healthy Futures receive prenatal phone calls at enrollment and during each trimester of the pregnancy from a public health nurse in their community to address prenatal health and connect family to community resources. In addition, participants receive a home visit from the same public health nurse after their baby's birth. These visits include education on infant health, normal growth and development, immunizations and recommended well-child checkups. Public Health Nurses connect families to Parents as Teachers to receive more detailed parenting and child development information and frequent on-going support.

The Parents as Teachers model is the backbone of Equal Start. Parents as Teachers is a nationally recognized, research-based home visiting parent education model that helps parents learn strategies and techniques for maximizing their child's growth and development. The vision of Parents as Teachers is that ALL parents will be their child's first and best teacher. There are four main components of Parents as Teachers: Home Visits, Resource Coordination, Group Meetings/Playgroups, and Developmental Screenings.
