Parole Office Recognizes Offender Success
The Berrien County Parole Office has been recognizing a "Parolee of the Month" for over two years now. The concept was first proposed by Parole Agent Eleanor Marquis, who wanted to provide an incentive and recognition for parolees who exhibited outstanding behavior. The agents nominate parolees during their monthly staff meeting by summarizing the parolee's progress. Staff then vote to choose one parolee. Agent Marquis was quick to note that the parolee chosen is not always one without violations or difficulty on parole but rather often someone who has exhibited a significant positive change in behavior or compliance.
The "Parolee of the Month" is honored with a summary of their achievements on the board along with their picture. Also, they are given a certificate and a $10.00 gift card to recognize their success. This is a unique way to recognize offender success.
This type of positive reinforcement is a simple way to reward behaviors that lead to success while providing the encouragement that has often been lacking in the parolee's life.
