Karen Smith, an officer
at Muskegon Temporary Facility, has been chosen 1993 Corrections Officer
of the Year. She was selected by the Michigan Corrections Officers' Training
Council Committee from among five finalists. Smith, who has worked at
MTF the past four years, is described by supervisors and colleagues as
"thorough, conscientious and professional".
Officer Smith and
all 'Officer of the Year' nominees will be honored during a banquet on
May 5 a the Holiday Inn University Place in East Lansing. Awards will
be presented to each officer nominee following the banquet and Smith and
the other finalists will receive special recognition.
The other finalists
are Bryon D. King, a resident unit officer at Carson City Temporary Facility;
Francis C. Konieczki, a resident unit officer at Western Wayne Correctional
Facility; Robert Pierce, a resident unit officer with the Special Alternative
Incarceration program; and James E. Sivrais, a resident unit officer at
Camp Pellston.
Officer Smith, who
has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Central Michigan University,
is the first woman to be selected as Michigan's Corrections Officer of
the Year.
