ERT TAKES 3RD PLACE AT NATIONAL COMPETITION

The Michigan Department of Corrections sent a sent 32-member blended Emergency Response Team to participate in the 2008 Mock Prison Riot held in Wheeling, West Virginia. The team commander was Jeff Wilcox (Kinross ERT) and the Assistant Commander was Jeff Howard (Adrian ERT). The team was represented by members of the 21 facility and regional teams that operate daily within the prisons. This is the 8th year Michigan has sent a team to compete and Michigan placed 6th overall among 21 teams participating.

Scott Grinnell (Ionia ERT) and Daren Ferden (Jackson ERT) competed in the "Super Swat Cop" competition. Scott won 1st place and Daren took 5th out of a field of 24 competitors. This is the best finish ever! Congratulations Scott and Daren. The Michigan team also took 3rd place in the Obstacle Course competition. They were only 2 seconds behind 2nd place. This is also the best finish by the Michigan Team. The team of five was: Daren Ferden, Scott Grinnell, Scott Kulinski (Jackson ERT), Tim Maxson (Jackson ERT) and Clint Slusser (Ionia ERT).

The most impressive statistic about the Michigan ERT competing in the Mock Prison Riot is how well they stand out against other teams. Many of the teams participating in the competition are "full-time" tactical teams unlike our Team, which is a voluntary team getting only 64 hours of training per year. Many of the members put many hours of personal time into the program to improve the team. Additionally, many of the members have never trained with each other prior to competing in scenario exercises.

The way the Michigan team shines speaks highly of our trainers and our members. Thank you to all of the ERT members who participated. We also want to extend our gratitude to all of the Administrators, Managers, Supervisors and co-workers who support our program. This is truly a TEAM effort and our performance reflects it.
