Under the administrative control of the Oaks Correctional Facility, Camp Sauble originally opened in 1960, the main building was destroyed by fire in 1982. Construction of the primary building was completed in 1985.  Camp Sauble was a 158 bed minimum secure facility located on 40 acres of land near Freesoil in Mason County. It was primarily a Public Works Camp, offering services to National Forest Service, the city of Manistee, the Mason County road Commission, Ludington State park, Maple Grove and Dickson Townships and other municipalities. Camp Sauble Provided manpower to surrounding communities while preparing prisoners to return to community living.
