Michigan Center for Geographic Information

Mission

 

The Michigan Center for Geographic Information (CGI) provides leadership, technical expertise and policy for the development, use, dissemination, promotion and sharing of geographic information in the state of Michigan. The Center's mission will enable state government to more effectively and efficiently serve the citizens, businesses and other governments of the state in areas of public protection, homeland security, economic development, environmental protection and transportation.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

Coordinate Enterprise Geographic Information Technology

  • Develop and Maintain an Enterprise-wide Geographic Information Technology Strategic Plan
  • Develop and Maintain an Enterprise-wide Geographic Information Technology Funding Structure
  • Evaluate enterprise business processes and applications for the purpose of recommending appropriate integration of Geographic Information Technologies to reengineer current processes and applications for more efficient and effective delivery of state government services
  • Evaluate Enterprise-wide Geographic Information Data Warehousing Needs
  • Establish and Maintain a Collection of Enterprise-wide Geographic Information User Tools
  • Develop and Maintain an Enterprise-wide Communication and Relationship Structure


Provide Geographic Information Technology Products and Services

  • Deliver Geographic Information Technology Products and Services to State
  • Deliver Geographic Information Technology Products and Services to Local and Federal Government, the Private Sector, and the Public
  • Services Include but are Not Limited to:

               Geographic Information System (GIS) Services

                     Custom Mapping

                     Geographic Information System Analysis

               Data Integration and Development

                      GeoCoding

                      Data Conversion

                      Conflation

                      Michigan Geographic Framework Consultation

               Application Development

                      Customize existing Geographic Information Technology

                             tools to meet Michigan's business needs

                      Develop new Geographic Information Technology tools

                             to meet Michigan's business needs

 

Implement a Michigan Geographic Information Network

  • Administer Formal Relationships with
          Federal Government partners
          Local Government partners
          Private Sector partners


Develop and Administer Enterprise Standards

  • Develop Enterprise Geographic Information Technology Standards
  • Monitor Compliance


Develop and Administer a Geographic Information OutReach Program

  • Promote Geographic Information Technology
  • Evaluate and Endorse new Geographic Information Technologies
  • Coordinate Training Workshops
  • Coordinate Information Workshops
  • Coordinate the Michigan Geographic Information Users Forum


Administer the Geographic Framework Program

  • Monitor Usage Compliance
  • Maintain Core Geographic Framework Components
  • Reengineer Geographic Framework Update Processes


Administer Michigan’s gateway to Geographic Information

  • Design and Maintain a Central Geographic Information Access Portal
  • Develop and Coordinate Departmental Processes for Publishing Geographic Information through the Central Portal
  • Establish a Collection of Enterprise Geographic Information Technology Applications
  • Promote the Use of Geographic Information as a Valuable Communication Tool
  • Promote Data Standardization and Data Sharing
