Prior to his appointment as Executive Administrator for the Office of Aeronautics, Mike held elected office as the Township Supervisor in his community since 2008. In that capacity he was statutorily responsible for enforcing all ordinances, managing public works, property and improvements, preparing the annual budget, purchasing, human resources, and directing the planning, building, zoning, assessing, police, and fire departments as well as handling all contracts. He was the chairperson of the township board presiding over meetings and appointed members to various boards and committees.
From 2000-2008 Mike served as the Deputy Airport Director - Maintenance and Operations at Bishop International Airport. In that role he had direct responsibility for the day to day operation of the 3rd largest air carrier airport in the state of Michigan, supervising 35 staff in the Maintenance, Operations, and Public Safety departments at the airport. In that capacity he developed and managed an $11 million operating and $5 million capital budget annually. He was the designated Emergency Management & Security Coordinator and Zoning Administrator for the airport.
Over the course of his career Mike has performed direct project management of over $50 million in capital improvements that have given him the opportunity to participate in master planning, grant funding, bidding & selection, environmental, design, construction administration, and to work cooperatively with federal, state, & county agencies, consultants, and contractors. He is thoroughly familiar with board procedures, budgeting, finance, property acquisition, DBE requirements, and environmental issues.
Prior to his position at Bishop Airport he served as Deputy Director of Detroit City Airport from 1996 - 1998, and Director from 1998 - 2000. Since 1990 he worked as a Planning Consultant and was a System Planner for the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) from 1993 - 1996, helping develop the Regional Aviation System Plan (RASP). In 2000 he worked for Wade Trim Associates as a Planning and Zoning Specialist working with local units of government in developing and administering zoning ordinances, downtown development plans and master plans.
Mike earned both a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Michigan. He is an Accredited Member of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and holds certificates in Airport Safety, Security & Operations. Mike served on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Association of Airport Executives (MAAE) for 6 years and became President of the Association in the fall of 2003.
Mike formerly served as an Executive Board Member on the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce and as President of the Oakland County Association of Township Supervisors. He also served on SEMCOG's Transportation Advisory Committee and is Secretary/Treasurer of the Waumegah Lake Improvement Board.
He is a Certified Professional Planner (AICP) and served on the Livonia Zoning Board of Appeals from 1995 - 1996. He served as President of the American Society of Public Administration from 1994 -1995. He formerly served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors for the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and was an active member of the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission - Technical Advisory Committee.
Mike has been married for 22 years to his wife Nancy and they have two children, Daryl Ann and Evan.
