M-85 Railroad Crossing Improvement Study

About the study

This study will involve an engineering study and an environmental review to explore different ways to improve the M-85 (Fort Street) and Canadian National (CN) (GTW) railroad at-grade crossing, just north of Van Horn Road in Trenton, Wayne County.

It will look at several possible options, including:

  • Building a bridge over the railroad (called a grade separation),
  • Creating a tunnel under the railroad, or
  • Keeping the current setup as it is.

Community members and other stakeholders will have a chance to share their opinions, and their input will help guide the final decision.

Section 4(f) Public Notice

This proposed project will build a new bridge on M‑85 over the CN Railroad and realign the North–South Trail 6 to a new, safer crossing. Pedestrian access will be maintained via new sidewalks and shared-use paths on the bridge, improving walking and biking connections through the area.

Please review the project’s Section 4(f) Public Notice and provide comments by June 10 to Jeff Horne, MDOT project manager, at MDOT-Metro-TaylorTSC@Michigan.gov or via the project website comment form. All comments received during the public comment period will be reviewed and considered before the Section 4(f) de minimis determination is finalized.

What is Section 4 (f)?

Section 4(f) is a federal law that helps protect public parks, recreation areas, wildlife refuges and historic sites when transportation projects are built. In general, federal agencies must avoid using these places unless no feasible and prudent alternative exists, and they must work to minimize harm (49 U.S.C. § 303). The North–South Trail 6 is considered a Section 4(f) resource because it is a public recreation facility.’

M-85 project public meeting

When: 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 15

Where: Westfield Community Center, 2700 Westfield Road, Trenton, MI 48183

What: MDOT is hosting a public meeting to discuss the engineering study and environmental review of the Canadian National (CN) (GTW) railroad crossing at M-85 (Fort Street) in Trenton, Wayne County, just north of Van Horn Road. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the project team and learn details about the project.

MDOT is currently conducting an engineering study and environmental review to explore ways to improve the railroad crossing. The selected alternative is building an M-85 bridge over the railroad. This alternative will move forward through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and design process.

The anticipated schedule for this project includes finishing the environmental review by early 2027, design of construction documents from 2027 to late 2028, and construction of the project in 2029-2030.
