Our hiring process is designed to be fair, thorough, and transparent—ensuring every applicant has a clear view of the steps involved.

From application review to interviews, offers, and onboarding, we’re committed to supporting you each step of the way. Let’s walk through what you can expect as you begin your path toward joining the DTMB team.

  • Application Submission and Initial Screening

    • Candidates submit applications in NEOGOV the State of Michigan’s job portal. It is important that you read through the full job posting, provide all required documents and answer the supplemental questions as thoroughly and completely as you can.
    • Michigan Civil Service Commission Rule 3-8 authorizes veterans' preference for veterans or qualifying spouses who meet minimum qualifications in selection processes for the state classified service. Be sure to register for Veterans Preference as part of your application process if you are eligible.
    • DTMB HR reviews applications to verify if you meet minimum qualifications.

  • Referral to Hiring Manager

    • If candidates pass civil service screening, names are forwarded/“referred” to DTMB hiring managers for further consideration.
  • Civil Service Review

    • Qualified applications may enter a civil service evaluation to ensure that applicants meet eligibility.
    • Some positions require licenses, certifications, standardized testing or supplemental questionnaires, depending on job specifications.
  • Selection and Interviews

    • Hiring managers review the candidate pool and invite select applicants to interviews. Interviews may be conducted over the phone, virtually, or in-person. Depending on the position, multiple interviews may be conducted.
    • Interviews may include competency-based, technical, and/or behavioral questions tailored to the role.
  • Conditional Job Offer

    • The chosen candidate receives a conditional offer, contingent on passing additional checks:
      • Pre-employment drug test (per Civil Service Commission Rule 2-7)
      • Criminal background check
  • Background Check and Drug Screening

    • A thorough background check is conducted. A drug test is required before finalizing employment.
    • Once checks are cleared, the formal offer is extended. A failed background check or drug test will result in offer revocation.
  • Onboarding and Probation Period

    • You begin onboarding, which typically includes photo ID issuance, building access setup, computer system accounts, and DTMB new employee orientation.
    • A standard probationary period (often 12-months) follows, during which both employee performance and organizational fit are evaluated.
  • Waiting Times and Status Updates

    • The entire process can take from several weeks to several months, depending on the role.
    • Applicants can usually check application status in the NEOGOV portal (e.g., “application received,” “under review,” “referred,” “hired”).
  • Notified Outcomes

    • If you’re not selected for an interview, you may not receive direct notification—NEOGOV application status often remains “application received.”
    • Interviewed applicants will receive notification of the outcome, regardless of selection.
