May 24, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) plans to open a temporary ramp leading from I-94/I-69 to Water Street on Friday, May 25, to allow westbound traffic to exit onto the access road that connects Water Street and the Lapeer Connector. Currently, two-way traffic is maintained on the eastbound side of I-94/I-69 so that crews can reconstruct the westbound lanes from Pine Grove Avenue to Lapeer Road. All work on this $90 million reconstruction/widening is expected to be fully opened to traffic in November.
Westbound traffic will continue over the new overpass on the Lapeer Connector above I-94/I-69 and use a new median turnaround just south of Indian Road. The crossover allows traffic to access Water Street via the eastbound access road.
The temporary ramp was constructed after numerous business owners on Water Street expressed their concerns about customer access. The temporary ramp will remain in use until crews open the westbound lanes of I-94/I-69 this fall.
